Descriptive Paper

Categories:

For this assignment, you need to research and select a minority leader that has played significant leadership role in addressing social justice issue/s in the United States.  This leader may be a scholar, educator, activist, or a community leader belonging to a non-dominant cultural group in the US. To this end, you are required to read a biography, autobiography, or life history of the selected leader in order to identify and describe three pivotal events situated within a social-cultural context. In other words, these key events are described within the larger societal contexts illuminating meaning and challenges in addressing social justice issues. Include specific examples from the biography to illustrate and support those challenges.

Briefly introduce the minority leader or the subject of a biography including where and when he/she was born. Provide a brief historical backdrop and state why you selected this particular individual. Throughout the paper, use active rather than passive voice whenever possible. An example of active voice is, “ John Doe was an inspiring African-American civil rights leader who challenged racial segregation in the Jim Crow era in the US.” while an example of passive voice is, “School segregation in the South was first challenged by John Doe.” Avoid excessive use of “I” or “we” when writing your biographical narrative analysis.

Biographical Events

In this section of the paper, describe chronologically three pivotal events associated with the selected individual including relevant social, cultural, educational or political contexts within which the incidences took place.

Then, provide examples for each biographical event to illustrate leadership challenges that the individual encountered and describe strategies undertaken to address social justice issues.

Discussion

In this section of the paper, compare and contrast what you learned from the biographical analysis of a leader from the non-dominant cultural group and connect with concepts or information from course readings in an effort to demonstrate the currency of social, cultural, educational, and political challenges culturally diverse students experience in the schooling context. Use American Psychological Association (APA; 2016) format for all within text citations and for the reference list.

Excellent papers will explicitly include three pivotal events of the selected minority leader and three examples to support the above-mentioned incidences. Additionally, excellent papers will connect to at least three different concepts or pieces of information (e.g., demographic or achievement data) from course readings. Above average papers will explicitly include two pivotal events of the selected minority leader and two examples to support the above-mentioned incidences. Additionally, above average papers will explicitly connect with two course concepts or pieces of information. Average papers will explicitly include one pivotal event of the selected minority leader and one example to support the above-mentioned incidence. Also, average papers will connect with one course concept or piece of information. If no connections are made between the biographic narrative and content or information from the course readings, no points for this requirement will be earned. Avoid using direct quotations unless is it absolutely necessary. People sometimes overuse quotations (noun) to quote (verb) authors, thus making it unclear for the reader whether or not the person actually understands the ideas quoted.

Conclusion

In the conclusion section, summarize important lessons/ insights that you have gained as result of this biographical analysis of a social justice leader from a non-dominant group and stipulate one possible impact on individuals from minority groups within the schooling context.
